The competition involved understanding sentiments from customer feedback. The winning algorithm was a blend of topical models and semantic analysis to mine both the subject of feedback as well as the sentiment associated with it. Such models are applicable in numerous business areas where organizations have tons of feedback but fail to identify what exact product or service the feedback is for.
